EcoSPM - Shelly PM Mini Gen3
Energy meter for individual circuits and loads
The EcoSPM is a Shelly PM Mini Gen3 with EcoSensors firmware. It measures voltage, current, power and energy of a single-phase circuit and sends the values via WiFi to ecosensors.cloud – without a detour through the Shelly cloud.
Technically the firmware is based on ESPhome (see the general guide). The hardware is the standard Shelly PM Mini Gen3; it is flashed once via cable (see Flash it yourself).
What you get
- Voltage and current
- Active power
- Total import (energy in kWh)
- Grid frequency
- Temperature inside the device
The values appear in your dashboard on ecosensors.cloud.
Installation
The Shelly may only be installed in the circuit by a qualified electrician following the manufacturer's instructions.
Install and wire the Shelly PM Mini Gen3 according to Shelly's instructions. The EcoSensors firmware changes nothing about the wiring.
Once the firmware is installed (ready-made from us, or flashed yourself), the sensor starts when switched on and, if it finds no known WiFi, opens its hot spot ecospm-<ID> after about a minute.
Commissioning
The setup is the same for all sensors of the Eco series and is described in the general guide. Your sensor is called ecospm-<ID>:
- Set up WiFi – connect to the hot spot
ecospm-<ID>, enter the WiFi credentials - Open the web interface at
http://ecospm-<ID>orhttp://ecospm-<ID>.local - Register the sensor with the EcoSensor ID (
ecospm-<ID>) - In case of problems: Troubleshooting
Firmware update
With the EcoSPM you download the update file yourself and transfer it via the sensor's web interface (Way C of the general guide):
- On the Firmware page, download the update file (
.ota.bin). - Upload it in the sensor's web interface under OTA Update.
The sensor does not have to be removed for this; you only need to be in the same WiFi. The general notes are under Firmware update. If the sensor can no longer be reached via WiFi, the only option left is flashing again via cable (see below).
Flash it yourself (DIY)
A brand-new Shelly PM Mini Gen3 still carries the Shelly firmware. To switch it to the EcoSensors firmware, it is flashed once via cable (serial). For this the programming connections on the board have to be soldered on (difficulty: high).
Danger: The Shelly is connected to mains voltage (230 V). Only work on the device completely disconnected from the mains and connect it for flashing exclusively via the USB-serial adapter (3.3 V). All steps are at your own risk; the manufacturer's warranty may become void.
You need: soldering iron, a USB-serial adapter with 3.3 V (not 5 V!), a computer with Chrome/Edge, the firmware file "Complete image (initial installation)" from Firmware.
Six connections are needed on the board:
| Connection | Connection to the USB-serial adapter |
|---|---|
| 3V3 | 3.3 V |
| GND | GND |
| RX | TX of the adapter |
| TX | RX of the adapter |
| BootSEL | GND – only for starting in flash mode |
| Reset | only briefly connected to GND to restart |
- Disconnect the Shelly from the mains, open the housing, solder on the connections.
- Connect BootSEL to GND (flash mode) and connect the adapter or trigger a brief reset.
- Flash the firmware with the ESP Web Tool – as described in the general guide, Way D (address 0).
- Disconnect the adapter, release the BootSEL connection and reassemble the Shelly.
- Install it and continue with Commissioning.
The chip is an ESP32-C3 with 8 MB flash. A detailed hardware description (pin assignment of the board) can be found at ESPHome Devices: Shelly PM Mini Gen3.
